Gluten, Sugar, Love: Tales From the Path to Joy - Starving

In the 1940’s the government starved a bunch of male volunteers. The men wanted to serve our country this way instead of going abroad to fight in WWII. They were starved to understand the effects of hunger on people. You see, war and famine go together. Hitler had been starving Jews. The victims of war would be finding refuge on our shores. They wanted to be ready for them. Like me, what they discovered is that hunger turns men into beasts first, then zombies, and often, both. The consequences of starvation endured long after starvation ended. Read More

Gluten, Sugar, Love: Tales From the Path to Joy - Hangry

Wandering around, taking it in, J. suddenly says the fatal words, “I’m hungry”. The anxiety in me ignites. We decide on a restaurant, but there is a 20-minute wait for a table. I see the shadow cross J’s face as he begins to pace around the hostess station. Agitation and desperation infiltrate his gait. I suggest we go to the bar. He snaps at me accusingly, “I don’t need to drink, Paulina, I need to eat!” I ignore him and walk to the bar. I order a mudslide and bring it over. He takes a sip. No sooner does the chocolate ice cream hit his tongue than I see a wave of calm wash over his face. The serotonin has been released and the beast is soothed. I can almost hear him purr. Read More

Gluten, Sugar, Love: Tales From the Path to Joy - Date Night

“Paulina, there’s someone at the door for you and he is veeery handsome!” my roomate cooed. I grabbed my purse and walked down the stairs of the Seaport loft we shared. “Are you ready?” asked my date, smiling. The sleeves of his navy blue suit revealed just a glimpse of cufflink on his French cuffs when he opened the door to let me pass. Outside, he stepped to one side holding his hand out for me to hold as the driver held the limo door open. “West Broadway, Joe. The Odeon”. Read More

Sugar, Gluten, Love: Tales from the Path to Joy - Making Excuses

I think about the awful places J put me - places I never in a million years thought I’d find myself. I have to dig deeply into my yogic lessons to recall that the good-for-you that you get does not always resemble the good-for-you that you imagined. Blessings often come in strange packaging. If I was drawn to him, it's because of something I needed, regardless of his intentions. I had to take responsibility for the excuses I made in order to be with him. Read More
